Physical Requirements Regular use of computer workstation and
repetitive motion. Occasional standing or walking with objects up
to 10 pounds. Occasional exposure to cuts/punctures and burns and
regular exposure to blood borne/airborne pathogens.

Job Summary The Laboratory Scientist, certified will be primarily
responsible for the workup of cultures, molecular microbiology
testing, and specialty lab testing. The Laboratory provides
services to all aspects of this Level I trauma center and
throughout the healthcare enterprise, including solid organ and
bone marrow transplant, KY Children's Hospital, and Markey Cancer
Center.
This position is also responsible as needed for specimen
processing, specimen triage, order processing, rapid and stat
testing, gram staining, performing multiplex and routine molecular
assay, media QC and monitor/stock supplies, and reporting routine
and digital cultures. The candidate will also perform special
projects as assigned.
The CAP -Accredited Laboratory at the University of Kentucky
showcases the use of state-of-the-art instrumentation and
technology.
Given the COVID -19 pandemic, and the need to protect our
university community including our students, staff, faculty and
visitors, the University of Kentucky is requiring COVID -19
vaccination for all new hires prior to starting employment.
Therefore, as of October 18, 2021, all new hires prior to their
first day of employment must submit appropriate documentation
showing, i) completion of the first vaccination against COVID -19,
or ii) completion of the full vaccination series against COVID -19,
or iii) approved exemption (medical contraindications or a
sincerely held religious belief) through the formal exemption
process from the COVID -19 vaccination requirement. For those
employees who have completed the first vaccination against COVID
-19 prior to their first day of employment, the second vaccination
(if applicable) must be completed following the vaccination
recommended schedule to be considered fully vaccinated.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities This position requires excellent
written, verbal, interpersonal, problem solving skills and good
keyboarding skills. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to
multi-task and work as part of a team.
Does this position have supervisory responsibilities? No
Preferred Education/Experience A Bachelor's degree in Medical
Laboratory Science or Microbiology and previous experience in a
clinical microbiology laboratory preferred.
