Job Summary / Purpose

The Infection Preventionist (IP) is a part of a team
responsible for implementation of the infection prevention program and will
perform ongoing surveillance and epidemiologic review of patients, employees
and the environment for the facility / facilities. The Infection Preventionist
uses epidemiological principles and methods for identification and prevention
of infectious diseases to patients and healthcare workers. The Infection
Preventionist is focused on surveillance, which is done to identify areas of risk
and develop evidence based strategies to prevent the development of hospital
acquired infections (HAIs). These strategies include staff and physician
in-services as well as educational tool development. The position manages,
studies, and educates on all aspects of hospital functions related to
surveillance, prevention and control of infections for all patient

The Infection Preventionist works collaboratively with the
data support specialist/ analyst and the Director / Manager to coordinate data
collection and analysis and assists in the overall risk assessment of the
inpatient and outpatient population. The position also provides support in the
implementation of guidelines, policies and initiatives. The Infection
Preventionist is active in the classification and reporting of all HAIs and
community acquired infections. The position will adhere to reporting standards
as set forth by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) and other regulatory bodies and will enter this
information accurately and timely into National Healthcare Safety Network
(NHSN) system. The Infection Preventionist will work with the local and state
health department to identify trends in reportable diseases.


Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  • Infection Prevention &
    Control: Administrative Oversight
  • Implement a hospital wide
    Infection Prevention program, coordinate surveillance reports and provide input
    into annual report. Includes the annual implementation, review and evaluation
    of the facility's infection prevention and control plan.
  • Provide suggestions for
    revising the surveillance program based on the facility risk assessment and
    national practice standards to ensure risk reduction and prevention of
  • Ensure Infection Prevention
    program compliance with local, state and federal guidelines.
  • Accept delegated authority to
    monitor and resolve issues related to infection prevention.
  • Apply the Joint Commission,
    infection prevention-related standards to ensure full compliance with
    regulatory & accrediting standards and local & divisional goals.
  • Coordinate the planning and
    implementation of infection control risk assessment and surveillance activities
    for construction projects within the facility.
  • Participate in and promote antimicrobial
    stewardship to provide optimal, prudent antimicrobial use for patients across
    the care continuum.
  • Surveillance, Monitoring and
    Performance Improvement:
  • Under the direction of the
    Direction / Manager of Infection Prevention, coordinate investigations of
    outbreaks, communicable disease exposures and potential transmission.
  • Identify the need for special
    epidemiologic studies, as well as setting standards, evaluating compliance and
    ensuring follow up.
  • Maintain compliance with
    accrediting and regulatory agencies and ensure timely reports for communicable
    diseases according to state law.
  • Participate in department
    infection surveillance and prevention activities, including environment of care
  • Provides interpretation and
    preparation of infection prevention and control data for key stakeholders
    including clinical staff, infection prevention leadership, infection control
  • and facility leaders
  • Monitors the data reliability
    and validity of the information used and submitted to third party reporting,
    reflecting the facility's surveillance (i.e.: National Healthcare Safety
    Network (NHSN)
  • Carry out infection
    prevention standards and expectations, ongoing monitoring for timely reporting
    and meaningful results.
  • Use tools and methods for
    improvement methodologies, including use of evidence-based tool kits and
  • Participate in efforts for
    concurrent monitoring as needed for compliance and results based on new
    implementations or processes under review.
  • Coordinate infection
    prevention & control improvement efforts with leaders across facilities,
    care continuum and facility service lines of division.
  • Support all SafetyFirst
    efforts. Role models expectations and techniques.
  • Partner with the Quality
    Division, integrate Infection Prevention surveillance systems and findings into
    patient safety and quality improvement programs.
  • Collaborate with the hospital
    epidemiologist on a regular basis regarding trends in organisms and/or

  • Collaborate with facility and
    department leaders to implement infection control best practices.
  • Provide consultation related
    to infection prevention and control and communicable disease.
  • Provide consultation to
    employee health program for employee practices, prevention and control
    strategies for infectious/communicable diseases.
  • Collaborate with other
    infection preventionists across other KYOne facilities and promote involvement
    in local, state, and/or national forums.
  • Serve as Infection Prevention
    representative for health care associated product selection.
  • Serve as Infection Prevention
    subject matter expert to plant facilities / engineering on indoor air quality,
    construction and new facility development.
  • Serve as Infection Prevention
    liaison to employee health (EH) for EH and safety education, evaluation of
    exposures, preventive measures and risk assessment.

          Education (for CHI Leadership Job Levels from Supervisor through

          Required Education for Staff Job Levels

          Bachelor's degree and
          minimum of 1 year experience in the discipline OR 3 years' experience in the
          discipline, OR Master's degree and no experience. --

          Required Licensure and

          in Infection Prevention & Control (CIC) or CIC eligible after 2 years.-- Registered Nurse, currently licensed in
          Commonwealth of Kentucky.

          Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills and

          • Must be able to
            speak and understand English fluently. Ability to read, analyze, and
            interpret common scientific and technical journals. Ability to respond to
            sensitive inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members
            of the business community. Demonstrate exceptional customer service and
            interact effectively with physicians, patients, residents, visitors, staff
            and the broader health care community. Strong verbal and written
            communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills. Maintain
            confidentiality and protect sensitive data at all times. Knowledge of
            practices and processes utilized in interpreting and complying with
            infection prevention and epidemiological issues and standards. Ability to
            define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
            Excellent problem solving and trouble shooting skills. Excellent
            organizational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines. --Proficiency in use of Microsoft
            Office suite programs. Skilled in data analysis, aggregation, reporting /
            display and trend and pattern analysis a plus. Ability to use different
            search engines to evaluate evidence based best practice. Knowledgeable of
            National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). Available for flexible scheduling
            particularly during the influenza immunization initiative and other education
            related events.


            PREFERRED Qualifications

            • BSN, MSN or MPH preferred. Clinical
              experience in nursing, microbiology or public health epidemiology and
              reporting methods preferred. Clinical experience in medical
              surgical, critical care, surgical services or other appropriate clinical
              experience preferred.
