Physical Requirements Sitting and standing for long periods of
time; lifting/carrying up to 15lbs. Stooping and bending
Shift Monday - Friday generally from 8:00am-5:00pm. Occasional
nights and weekends may be required.
Job Summary The laboratory of Dr. Bjoern Bauer is seeking an Animal
Services Coordinator.
This position will use advanced knowledge of animal research to
coordinate and lead animal operations for the laboratory. Maintains
and manages existing animal models (transgenic animals, knock-out
animals, unique animal models, chronic epileptic animals). Uses
in-depth knowledge of rodents (mice, rats) to coordinate and
oversee animal health monitoring and care. Uses knowledge of animal
protocols to resolve issues and helps the team to make timely
decisions regarding the need for intervention by veterinarians or
other professionals. Organizes animal work, plans animal studies,
and takes care of animal-related equipment (e.g., stereotactic
frames, surgery equipment, behavioral equipment, SomnoSuite,
perfusion pumps, video/ EEG , etc.). Assesses, supervises, or
provides after-hours care of animals and facilities when
necessary.
Additional responsibilities include using in-depth knowledge and
experience to conduct animal-related procedures including animal
handling, injections (ip, iv, sc), oral gavages, feeding studies,
blood collections and tissue harvest. Independently conducts
seizure inductions (goal: 1-2 per month). Setup and conduct seizure
inductions, monitor, and care for animals during and after seizure
inductions. Conduct surgeries in mice and rats including EEG
transmitter implantation, tumor cell implantation, cranial window
surgery, microinjections. Setup and conduct surgeries, post-surgery
monitoring and care of animals. Assists with analyzing of video/
EEG data. Collects, records, documents, and summarizes
animal-related research data.
The Animal Services Coordinator will train students and team
members in animal procedures, place animal-related orders,
coordinates shipping of tissue samples with collaborators and
assist with general laboratory management.
